As a member of the Eastern Road Race League (ERRL), we are promoting our own road race each year so our members can participate in all ERRL events whether on road or on closed circuits. ERRL promotes at least one road race each Sunday in the eastern region throughout the race season from early March to mid October. ERRL is currently made up of 43 cycling clubs covering the counties of Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk. You will need a British Cycling race license (silver or gold) in order to participate in the races. If you are a British Cycling member, you will not have to join the ERRL since it is affiliated to British Cycling.
We are relatively close to Redbridge Cycling Centre (aka Hog Hill) down by Hainault Forest Country Park. It is a 2km long closed circuit providing traffic free and safe criterium style racing, usually twice a week during the summer season. Generally, you will need a British Cycling race license (silver or gold) in order to participate.
Another nearby option of racing under BC rules, could be the Dunton Test Track near Laindon. In 2011, the Ford Cycling Club arranged a very popular Go-Race summer series. Go-Races are for 4th category riders and beginners only. It only requires a BC bronze race license.
We are, however, even closer to North Weald Airfield where The League International (TLI) arranges a summer league each year. Racing takes place on the airfield’s runway and its transportation roads each Tuesday, usually beginning in May and finishing in August. The circuit is about 3.6km long. It is a fun way to learn how to race because if you get blown out the back, you will be allowed a lap out so you can join the main group again as it comes round for the next lap. The league arranges races all over the UK as well as abroad. You do not need a British Cycling race license but you will have to join TLI which is not affiliated to British Cycling.
If you are 40 or over, you also have the option of joining the League of Veteran Road Cyclists (LVRC). It is a very active association with races all over the country for much of the summer season. The league arranges races on both road and closed circuits. You do not need a British Cycling race license but you will have to join the LVRC which is not affiliated to British Cycling. Perhaps the biggest difference between LVRC and BC road races is that BC rider categories are based on ability whereas LVRC categories are based on age.
