Cyclocross Racing

No experience necessary

Cyclocross is suitable for experienced racers and novices alike. New faces male, female and youths are always welcome, with Chelmer CC members regularly taking part in the Eastern Cyclocross League which runs from September to February.

Race Categories

There are races for Under 10’s, Under 12’s, Under 16’s, Vets 50+/Woman, Vets 40-49 and Senior/Junior. In addition to the Eastern Cross League, other local clubs offer a short series of winter events which are open to Chelmer CC members.

Loan bikes

Chelmer CC have a few small Cyclocross bikes and Mountain bikes for Under 12 riders that can be borrowed for the winter season which is a great way for children to start competitive cycling in a road free and safe environment.

Special bikes?

Cyclocross races are suitable for CX specific bikes or Mountain Bikes. The difference between a CX bike and Road Bike are primarily the brakes with a CX bike requiring cantilever brakes to avoid mud getting caught between the brakes and tyres. The tyres are also pimpled like a MTB tyre for grip. Many riders now prefer disc brakes on their Cyclocross bikes therefore with more road bikes being purchased with disc brakes and an increase in Gravel bike sales these can easily be used for Cyclocross in the winter. Standard SPD pedals and Mountain Bike shoes will also be required as expect a small amount of running and bike lifting over hurdles to add to the fun.

Qualified coaches

Russell Tribley is a British Cycling qualified Cyclocross coach and together with Lee Rowling (2nd claim member) offer coaching for ALL ages in September and October as the Cyclo Cross season gets underway each year. British Cycling Eastern Region also hold ‘contenders’ coaching sessions for aspiring youth riders looking to step up to the National Series, during the early season.
